Are Wallet Holsters Legal?

In a nut shell, it depends.

According to the ATF, if the firearm is completely encased by the holster and can be fired while in the holster, then you may need to receive approval, pay a fee to register the holster and get a tax stamp from the ATF. There has been a ton of blogs, chats, and bulletin board comments about this. Some individuals have stated it “illegal”, “you will get arrested”, etc. while others say it’s legal and will not cause an issue.

If the firearm is partially exposed, chances are it is legal and does not require special taxes or stamps. The wallet holsters sold by Gunner Security for the Ruger LCP, Kel-Tec, S&W Bodyguard, Kahr, Sig Sauer, Taurus, etc. have ATF approval and legal. In fact, you can read or download the ATF document that states their wallet holster is legal.

As the owner of Gunner Security, I have personally spoken to Police Officers, SWAT team members, FBI agents and bodyguards while they are inspecting this holster at my gun show booth. None of them had an issue with the holster. In fact, they usually purchased one or two of them.

It’s up to you to make the decision on a purchase but I have sold close to 1,000 myself and my LCP has a permanent home in one. If I ever need to draw my weapon, I can use two hands to steady my adrenaline pumped up body and can hopefully protect whomever I am with.

  1. Interesting info. I downloaded the ATF doc and took it with me to the gun range. They questioned the legality of this holster until I showed them the document. After they read it, everything was ok. Not sure why they were so paranoid. Glad I had the document. Thanks, Mike Champ

  2. I bought this holster from you, and take it and my Ruger everywhere with me. (PS. I do have my CCW) It still looks like new.
