How Far Should My Laser Beam Go?

Distance of Laser Beams

Lasers will travel the same distance in the day or night and in theory, a laser beam can go forever but there are many items that can influence the distance.  The air temperature, battery strength, the lasers mw rating, the lasers color, air impurities, fog, clouds, etc.

Class 1 and 2 lasers have an output power level between 3 to 5 milliwatt (mw) with 5mw being the maximum power output in most jurisdictions. Class 3 can go up to 100mw but are not classified for civilian use.

For firearms, you need a laser to project a beam as far as you want to shoot. For most handguns, 100 feet is more than you will ever need. For rifles, you can make the call, but I rarely need to shoot anything more than a quarter mile away. When comes down to it, just about any quality red or green laser will work for you.

The nice thing about the handgun rail mount lasers is they can also be used on rifles or shotguns using a standard rail mount.  This makes them an excellent choice if you want to swap firearms.
