Ankle Holsters – The Ultimate Concealed Carry

The Ankle Holster has been a standard for carrying a concealed weapon for many years. It has been used by everyone from law enforcement, often as a back up weapon, to the average person on the street. A business person wearing a tailored suit can carry an ankle holster and be confident their weapon is completely concealed. Ankle holsters can be particularly useful for women. Women’s pants are often form fitted around the waist making ITP (inside the pant) carry difficult. But a pair of slacks will often have plenty of room in the legs for an ankle holster.

Construction

Ankle Holsters are constructed to allow the weapon to sit in a holster a few inches higher than the foot. The holster pouch is attached to the main strap which wraps around the ankle. An upper strap, connected to the lower strap, sits near the top of the calf to support the lower strap. The distance between the straps is adjustable to accommodate different calf lengths. Many ankle holsters are ambidextrous in that they can be worn on either leg. And therefor they can often be worn on the inside or outside of the leg depending on your preference.

With the right holster style, adjusted properly, the ankle holster can accommodate a variety of weapons. In general, shorter barreled and lighter weapons work the best. Weapons that are too long and/or heavy can be cumbersome to wear and even difficult to draw.

Making It Work For You

Two keys to making an ankle holster work for you are; wearing the right pants and practicing the draw. Tight pants don’t work! You might like the way they look. But for your ankle holster you might as well keep your gun at home in the safe. You’ll never be able to draw it!

When you have the pants that will work, you need to practice. Drawing from an ankle holster is a lot more active than just drawing from a hip holster. You will generally need to kneel down, lift up your pant leg, undo the retention strap, draw the weapon, and get into a firing position. This is all easily accomplished once you know what you are doing, and when you’ve practiced the moves enough to feel comfortable with them. Therefore, don’t find yourself needing to draw your weapon and never having practiced the draw!

Ankle holsters offer a unique method of concealed carry and come with certain benefits. Here are some advantages of using an ankle holster:

  1. Deep Concealment: Ankle holsters provide deep concealment, allowing individuals to carry a firearm without the need for a cover garment like a jacket or untucked shirt. This makes them suitable for situations where traditional holsters may be more visible.
  2. Discreet Carry: Ankle holsters are particularly discreet and can be easily concealed, even when wearing more fitted clothing. This can be advantageous in formal or business settings where other forms of carry might be challenging to conceal.
  3. Secondary Firearm Carry: Ankle holsters are often used for carrying a secondary firearm. This can be a backup option for individuals who already carry a primary firearm on the hip or torso, providing an additional layer of preparedness.
  4. Comfort While Seated: Ankle holsters can be more comfortable when sitting for extended periods compared to holsters worn on the waistline. This can be beneficial for individuals who spend a significant amount of time driving or sitting at a desk.
  5. Quick Access While Seated: Ankle holsters can provide relatively quick access to a firearm while seated, making them suitable for situations where a person may need to draw a weapon from a seated position.
  6. Versatility for Different Outfits: Ankle holsters are versatile and can be worn with a variety of outfits, including those with a more formal or business attire. This adaptability allows for concealed carry in diverse settings.
  7. Concealment for Small Firearms: Ankle holsters are well-suited for smaller firearms, such as compact or subcompact pistols. This makes them a popular choice for individuals who prefer smaller, lightweight firearms for concealed carry.
  8. Ease of Movement: Ankle holsters can allow for a greater range of movement, especially in situations where bending or twisting may be required. This can be advantageous in active or dynamic environments.
  9. Accessibility in Close Quarters: Ankle holsters provide a concealed and accessible location for a firearm, even in close-quarters situations. This can be beneficial in scenarios where maintaining a low profile is essential.

While ankle holsters have these advantages, it’s important to note that they may not be suitable for everyone or every situation. Training and practice are crucial to ensure a safe and effective draw from an ankle holster. Additionally, users should be aware of local laws and regulations regarding concealed carry.
